How much do you know the Olympics and Taiwan?

Olympic Origins

The Olympic Games (or the Olympics) began in Olympia, Greece and that is why it’s called the Olympics. Olympia was the place the ancient Greeks used to offer sacrifices to their gods. During their religious ceremonies, the Greeks had contests to honor the gods. These contests emphasized the beauty and power of the physical body and included events such as foot races, boxing, and gymnastics.

According to the historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 B.C. The games were held every four years from 776 BC to 394 AD. However, around 393 AD, the Romans gained more power in Greece and banned the Olympics. The Romans were Christians and banned the Olympics because they thought the celebrations of Greek gods were against the teachings of their religion.
In 1896, by the effort of the French educator Coubertin, the first morden Olympic Games opened in Athens, Greece. They were held once every four years, with the duration of the games being no more than 16 days.

The Olympics emphasizes the spirit of participation. The purpose is for all sports groups to be allowed to compete, but not for countries to compare their sports capabilities. The Olympic Games have become a symbol of peace and friendship.
How much do you know the Olympics and Taiwan?
In Taiwan’s sporting world, there were many outstanding athletes who achieve glory in the Olympic Games. Taiwan’s first Olympic medalist was Yang Chuan-kwang, the Asian Iron Man. He struggled with his friend, Rafer Johnson, in the decathlon and received the silver medal in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. It was definitely an enormous honor for Taiwan.

Furthermore, Chi Cheng, also known as Flying Antelope, won the bronze medal for the 80-meter low hurdles in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. She was the first female Taiwanese athlete to win a medal. Chen Shih-Hsin, a Taekwondo athlete, was the first Taiwanese to win the gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. These honors helped Taiwan become more well-known to the world. We look forward to the performances of Chinese Taipei at Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Go, go, go, Chinese Taipei!
